Modular or Continuous? Choosing the Right Low Clearance Bar article main image

Used as a pre-emptive warning for approaching low clearance heights, durable aluminum low clearance bars are a great option for protecting buildings and structures. These aluminum bars come in two styles, modular or continuous.

What is a low clearance bar?

A low clearance bar is used to preemptively warn drivers of approaching height restrictions. They are constructed of durable aluminum and are painted standard high-visibility yellow with factory-applied black reflective vinyl. Custom options include:

  • Paint color to match brand or existing color palates
  • Symbols such as do not enter symbols or ADA symbols
  • Vinyl color is available in white and red in addition to standard black

Long-lasting reflective vinyl is applied to either one side or both sides of the bar to communicate the clearance height inside a facility, most commonly a parking garage.

What are the different styles of clearance bars?

Clearance bars come in two styles, modular or continuous. The modular design lowers shipping costs by segmenting the bar for shipping. Before installation, the segmented pieces are joined by a piece of metal (called a joiner) and set screws. Once joined, the finished bar looks virtually the same as a single-piece bar. The modular design is shipped as one-piece and does not require additional assembly.

How to Use the Joiner Extrusion

When should I use a modular low clearance bar?

A modular clearance bar is ideal for reducing shipping costs on bars over 90-feet. For example, a 20-foot clearance bar must ship by freight. Using a modular clearance bar, the 20-foot bar is segmented into smaller pieces and can be shipped ground, saving you money in shipping costs.

When should I use a continuous low clearance bar?

A continuous clearance bar is ideal for installations that require a bar 9-feet in length or smaller. These bars come with factory-applied reflective vinyl and arrive ready to install without additional assembly. They are also ideal for quick and simple installations.

Is aluminum the best choice for a low clearance bar?

The benefit of aluminum is its durability, not just in structure. While many materials, such as plastic or PVC, are used to make clearance bars, aluminum provides additional benefits. Think about it, if you hit metal compared to plastic, you will notice a difference. Similarly, when an overheight vehicle approaches a structure, they're going to hear and feel it when it comes in contact with the aluminum bar. The low clearance bar provides a physical indicator to the driver that their vehicle exceeds the clearance height, protecting you from costly property damage.

How long is the warranty?

The warranty, regardless of modular or continuous style, is 5 years.

Do I need to use filler to weigh down my clearance bar?

No, since our bars are made of aluminum, they don't require filler. Filler is typically used to weigh down lighter material. While aluminum isn't a heavy metal, it is heavy enough not to need filler to keep it from swaying in the wind.

Below is a graphic that simplifies comparing continuous and modular clearance bar features. While they offer most of the same benefits, such as custom graphics (symbols and personalized messages besides clearance heights) and alternative paint options, the main difference is how they are shipped (one-piece vs multiple pieces). Either way, both options are great at warning of low clearance heights and protecting facilities against damage from overheight vehicles.
